Lunenburg joins Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance

The Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance (MMEUA) is pleased to welcome the Town of Lunenburg and its municipal electric utility as the newest member of the Alliance.

LUNENBURG, N.S. – The Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance (MMEUA) is pleased to welcome the Town of Lunenburg and its municipal electric utility as the newest member of the Alliance.

MMEUA brings together municipally owned electric utilities across the Maritimes to collaborate, share expertise, and strengthen local leadership in the clean energy transition. With the addition of Lunenburg, the Alliance continues to grow its collective voice and capacity to serve customers and communities.

Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra says the decision to join MMEUA reflects the town’s commitment to ensuring its residents have reliable and sustainable power services.

“Joining MMEUA is a positive step for our community. It allows us to benefit from collaboration across the Maritimes. This partnership positions us to access innovation, funding, and shared services that will only serve to continue to strengthen service for Lunenburg residents.”

The Lunenburg Electric Utility has been municipally owned since 1937 and today provides service to about 2,300 metered customers, along with several hundred unmetered lighting and service accounts. It serves Lunenburg and surrounding areas, maintaining local ownership and accountability while ensuring reliable distribution for residents and businesses.

“We are delighted to welcome Lunenburg into the Alliance,” says Glen Fillmore, Chair of MMEUA and Vice-President, Strategic Growth and Transformation at Saint John Energy.

“The utility has a long tradition of local service and strong community connections. By joining MMEUA, Lunenburg gains access to shared expertise, innovative tools and opportunities to secure funding for smart grid and clean energy projects. Together, we can modernize our grids, strengthen resilience, and deliver sustainable solutions while keeping decisions local.”

Paul Nopper, Chief Administrative Officer for the town, adds that the move strengthens the utility’s long-term outlook.

“As part of MMEUA, we gain access to collective initiatives that can unlock savings, improve reliability, and build resilience. This collaboration ensures Lunenburg is well positioned to deliver reliable and sustainable power to our community well into the future.”

The Alliance, launched last February, includes municipal utilities in Saint John, Edmundston and Perth-Andover in New Brunswick; Antigonish, Mahone Bay, Berwick, Riverport and now Lunenburg in Nova Scotia; and Summerside in Prince Edward Island.

Maritime municipal electrical utilities unite to lead the energy transition

Eight municipal electrical utilities from across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have forged an alliance to explore new opportunities, navigate challenges and lead in the clean energy transition.

Eight municipal electrical utilities from across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have forged an alliance to explore new opportunities, navigate challenges and lead in the clean energy transition.

The Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance (MMEUA) unites the collective strengths of Saint John Energy, Edmundston Energy, the Perth-Andover Electric Light Commission in New Brunswick, municipal utilities in the Towns of Antigonish, Mahone Bay, Riverport and Berwick in Nova Scotia, and the City of Summerside in Prince Edward Island.

Amid a rapidly evolving energy landscape, the Alliance provides a unified platform for its members to innovate, collaborate, and deliver results that would be challenging to achieve independently.

By formalizing their collective efforts, the MMEUA ensures its members can effectively address sector-wide changes while advancing shared goals in renewable energy, operational excellence, and customer-focused solutions.

“Our utilities share a vision of a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient energy future,ˮ says Glen Fillmore, Chair of the Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance and Executive Director, Strategic Growth and Transformation at Saint John Energy. “The MMEUA gives us the platform to lead climate action, foster innovation, and deliver sustainable solutions while respecting the unique strengths of each community we serve.ˮ

The Allianceʼs goals include driving grid efficiency and reliability, sharing resources and expertise, and fostering public awareness about energy transition efforts. Key priorities include expanding the use of clean energy, modernizing and strengthening the energy grid, building strong connections with customers and communities, and improving efficiency and sustainability in operations.

It is focused on collaboration and shared innovation, ensuring each utility retains its independence and strong local connections.

“This Alliance is about building on our collective strengths while maintaining the unique identities and deep local roots of each member utility,ˮ says Vice-Chair Randy Delorey, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Antigonish. “By working together, we can achieve more than we could alone, all while staying closely connected to the communities we serve.ˮ

The MMEUAʼs strategic priorities align with commitments to climate action and renewable energy.

“Projects such as grid modernization, advanced metering, and integration of cutting-edge technologies for customer service are all tangible examples of how the Alliance will work to support a sustainable energy future for our communities and customers,ˮ says Greg Gaudet, Director of Municipal Services in Summerside, who serves as Executive Secretary for the Alliance.

With the Allianceʼs launch, member utilities look forward to engaging their communities and stakeholders on how this collaboration will deliver value while maintaining a deep understanding of each utilityʼs unique territory and customers.
